History of Its Creation
The idea of creating a museum dedicated to military history first emerged in 1986. The initiative came from the Texas Adjutant General’s Department and Major General James T. Dennis. Brigadier General John K. L. Scribner spearheaded the collection of historical artifacts, military equipment, and documents. The purpose of the museum was to tell the story of the Texas Military Forces.
In 1987, it was decided to house the museum at Camp Mabry in Austin, the headquarters of the Texas Military Department. In 1990, Building 6 at Camp Mabry, formerly a mess hall, was converted into a museum.
On November 14, 1992, the museum opened its doors to visitors. Since then, the Texas Military Forces Museum has collected more than 10,000 three-dimensional artifacts, 6,000 books, 20,000 historical photographs, and over 36 pieces of military equipment, including tanks, armored vehicles, helicopters, and aircraft.
Visitors can explore the history of the Texas Military Forces dating back to 1823, from the creation of the first militia in Stephen F. Austin’s colony up to the present day. Exhibits also cover the Texas Revolution, the era of the Republic of Texas, the Mexican-American War, the U.S. Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and more.
In 2006, the museum was officially named after its founder, Brigadier General John K. L. Scribner.
The Modern Era
It’s worth noting that from 2008 to 2012, the museum underwent a major renovation project costing about $6 million. The upgrades included improvements to exhibits and infrastructure. In 2019, the entrance areas and Hall of Honor were modernized. Admission to the museum is free. Additionally, the Texas Military Forces Museum regularly organizes live history programs, battle reenactments, educational activities, and other special events.
Today, the Texas Military Forces Museum is considered one of the most remarkable military history museums in Texas, covering about 45,000 square feet. Open daily to the public, it features realistic dioramas, interactive displays, and video presentations. Visitors can also experience live history programs, military reenactments, lectures, and special exhibitions for Veterans Day and other commemorative dates.
